Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS)

How can Energy Advisory Service Help?

To comply with ESOS, participants must undertake one or a series of energy audits covering all areas of significant energy consumption. ESOS audits must be undertaken, overseen and/or approved by a Lead Assessor.

Energy Advisory Service has a highly skilled lead assessor in Danny Braidwood with over 5 years experience in the industry.

In the last compliance period we helped over 30 major businesses in the UK comply with ESOS. Notable clients were 2 of the largest care home groups in the UK and the biggest and most well known pub chain.

What is ESOS?

ESOS is the UK Governments approach to implementing Article 8 of the EU Energy Efficiency Directive. It is a mandatory energy assessment and energy savings identification scheme for organisations operating in the UK. Organisations affected by ESOS will need to demonstrate compliance with the scheme every four years.

Who must comply?

The scheme applies to organisations operating within the UK that have either:

• 250 or more employees, or

• Annual turnover exceeds €50m and Balance Sheet worth exceeds €43m

To comply with ESOS, participants must undertake one or a series of energy audits covering all areas of significant energy consumption. ESOS audits must be undertaken, overseen and/or approved by a Lead Assessor.

Energy Audits

A successful energy audit should:

  • Lead to a better understanding of an organisation’s energy consumption

  • Detect any variations in energy consumption and the main drivers of these variations

  • Identify cost-effective energy saving opportunities and promote energy efficiency.

  • ESOS participants have the option of carrying out audits in stages within a compliance phase instead of carrying out a single energy audit covering all areas of significant consumption.

What is required?

Organisations qualifying for ESOS must:

  • Make an initial estimate of their total energy consumption.

  • Identify their areas of significant energy consumption.

  • Consider and chose the most appropriate routes and carry out all the required actions within the compliance phase.

  • Assign a lead assessor to conduct and/or supervise the energy audits and approve the ESOS assessment.

  • Ensure that the main energy saving conclusions and recommendations have been signed off at board level.

  • Submit a formal notification to the EA / SEPA confirming compliance with ESOS
